A History of Manchester City FC
Manchester City Football club’s history is quiet an interesting story. It resulted from the effort of the daughter of a rector of ST. Mark’s church. Anna Connell wanted to provide some activities in order to curb alcoholism and violence in that area.
* Founders: Connell, churchwardens William Beastow and Thomas Goodbehere.
* First name: ST. Mark’s (West Gorton) as a small church football team.
* Year: 13th November 1880
* Place: Gorton a district in East Manchester.
* Renamed: as Ardwick A.F.C in 1887 and moved to Hyde Road in Ardwick.
* Reformed: as Manchester City FC in the 1893-94 season due to financial troubles leading to reorganization among the club.
* First honour: winning second division in 1889 and promoted to first division.
* Fist major honour: winning FA Cup in 1904.
* Next move: a fire at Hyde Road forced them to move to Maine Road in Moss Side
* Glory era: 1965 to 1977 they had won FA Cup, European Cup Winners Cup, League cup.
* 1977 to1985: long period of decline followed and demanded a lot of fight back.
* 1987 to 1983: winning promotion back to the first division, Manchester city started to make a good progress.
* Recovery: after a decline during 1993 to 1998, the club underwent some of the field upheaval under the takeover of a new chairman.
They qualified for UEFA Cup after winning the Fair Play award in 2002. After a relegation in-between they gained better league results in 2009.
